PROTECT YOUR HEATING SYSTEM AFTER A POWER FLUSH

At Abbotts Maintenance, we always recommend protecting your investment after a power flush β€” and one of the best ways to do that is by installing a MagnaClean filter.

Manufactured by Adey, the MagnaClean is an industry-leading magnetic filter designed to capture and remove iron oxide (commonly known as rust or sludge) that naturally builds up in your central heating system over time. As water continuously flows through your system, tiny metal particles are released from inside your radiators and pipes. Left unchecked, this debris can seriously affect your heating efficiency and eventually cause breakdowns.

That’s where the MagnaClean comes in. Using a powerful magnet, it captures virtually 100% of iron oxide particles, keeping your system clean and running efficiently. It’s especially effective when installed straight after a power flush, helping maintain that β€œlike-new” performance for the long term.

EASY MAINTENANCE, NO ONGOING COSTS

One of the major benefits of a MagnaClean filter is that it doesn’t come with any running costs. All it requires is a simple clean-out, ideally once a year β€” a task that most homeowners can do themselves. If your system was heavily contaminated before the power flush, you might need to clean the filter a few times in the first year, but once the initial sludge is dealt with, annual maintenance is usually enough.

Failing to clean the filter can cause a build-up that reduces its effectiveness, potentially leading to further issues or the need for another power flush β€” something we always aim to avoid.

THE BENEFITS OF A MAGNETIC FILTER:

  • Extends the life of your boiler and system components

  • Helps maintain energy efficiency and reduce heating bills

  • Quick and simple installation

  • No recurring costs

  • Easy chemical dosing for treatments from Fernox, Sentinel, or Adey

  • Immediate improvement in system performance

Whether you're using high-quality inhibitors and cleaners from Fernox, Sentinel, or Adey, pairing them with a reliable magnetic filter is the best way to maximise the lifespan and efficiency of your heating system.

Why Power Flushing Your Central Heating System Is Essential

Over time, central heating systems can become clogged with rust, limescale, and sludge β€” all of which reduce efficiency and can cause long-term damage to your boiler and radiators. That’s where power flushing comes in.

A power flush uses a specialised machine to pump water through your heating system at high velocity. This process dislodges built-up debris from inside the pipework and radiators, thoroughly cleaning the system without causing any

damage. But why does sludge build up in the first place? Interestingly, radiators begin to corrode even before they’re installed in your home. During manufacturing, they’re often tested using water, then sealed β€” and this trapped moisture leads to internal rusting. Once installed and in use, this corrosion continues, gradually producing a sludge-like substance that circulates through your system.

At first, the water may appear grey. As the rust and sludge worsen, it darkens to black, eventually resembling thick engine oil. In severe cases, it can even turn a reddish-brown as rust becomes more dominant. If left untreated, this buildup can block the flow of hot water and cause multiple problems across your system.

COMMON SIGNS YOU MAY NEED A POWER FLUSH:

  • Cold spots on your radiators, especially at the bottom

  • Unusual noises from your boiler or radiators (e.g., rattling, banging)

  • Dirty or discoloured water when bleeding radiators

  • Slow heat-up times across your system

  • Radiators not heating evenly or staying cold

  • Boiler cutting out or locking out due to poor circulation

If you're experiencing any of these issues, it might be time to consider a professional power flush. It’s a highly effective way to restore efficiency, extend the lifespan of your system, and get your heating back in top condition.
